Cinco de Mayo or May 5th is another one of our favorite F&B holiday excuses we use to gather our friends together and enjoy a cocktail…or two…But…
What is Cinco de Mayo?
Is it a Mexican celebration of independence? The day the margarita was created?
Wikipedia says:
It originated with Mexican-American communities in the American West as a way to commemorate the cause of freedom and democracy during the first years of the American Civil War. It grew in popularity and evolved into a celebration of Mexican culture and heritage, first in areas with large Mexican-American populations, like Los Angeles, Chicago, and Houston.
Today the date is observed in the United States as a celebration of Mexican heritage and pride, even going as far as getting a Concurrent Resolution from President George W. Bush to observe May 5th (or Cinco de Mayo) with appropriate ceremonies and activities.
Now that this is clarified, let’s get to the real reason we enjoy Cinco de Mayo…
